Torrent salsa crazy
I don't cherry pick from reviews or other recommendations, I go out and try to hear everything I can, from the widest selection of artists possible. I am lucky if I find one track in 20 or 30 that will make it into my top pick DJ list. Salsa radio and youtube etc simply won't cover the breadth and depth of material I want to experience. Downloading gives a DJ a valuable extra avenue by which to listen to more.
Once you find the tracks you enjoy, will replay and will use commercially, then it's time to support the artists. Otherwise you are simply being penalised for not being immortal and thus having not been around to hear title tracks as released or in person to make that judgement in the first place.
So my position would be, buy what you like and replay and use. That extends past whether any given artist is now deceased. You will be paying, hopefully, producing companies that will support the current and next wave of artists you will want to buy music from.
Smejmoon Son Montuno. If you want to share music you should take risks outside this forum; share only your own music and even then you're still under threat. This is no joke, authors and copyright owners can get in trouble by sharing their music. Actually there are plenty of perfectly legal ways to use the various types of downloading to achieve exactly what I stated above. For example many radio shows of the past are variously available for download and totally legal so long as you don't broadcast them yourself.
You can also get sample collections ie the released 30 second or so snippets released for promotional reasons. This is all material left in the public domain, provided it isnt abused for commercial use or broadcast to an audience. The simple discussion of the ethics of downloading don't endanger any site. No one is saying go here and download this. If this were the case the newspapers and other journalistic outlets would never be out of court with the RIAA.
As I said, downloading is a powerful tool. However it is one, that with care, you can use perfectly legally and effectively. As to old tracks you can't find access to any other way, too bad, but then there's probably no way to listen to them to discover you like them in the first place, so I wouldn't worry!
If you did find someway to listen to them then contact the person who put it up for you on youtube or wherever and go from there. Personally I don't have a problem with it, I wouldn't have gone far in my salsa music appreciation without it. I've brought all sorts of CDs, almost all of which I enjoy listening too regularly. When I was starting out I had absolutely no idea about any artists or groups, or the sub genres under salsa, or anything else salsa music related. So I just downloaded everything I could get my hands on, and sifted through it I would do the same again if I was starting out with say opera appreciation Asking other people only gets you so far, too much personal taste involved.
