Residents in the Post-Dispositional Program may be allowed to leave the building for community-based programs and home visits once they obtain the appropriate program level and with the approval of the court of jurisdiction. In addition to the formal classroom setting, the residents are allowed to work in a unique greenhouse environment in which they grow utility friendly trees in cooperation with Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Tech.

The Green Thumb Nursery hosts various plant, flower, and tree sales throughout the year and they are open to the public. The residents have been invited to perform landscaping projects by various organizations and businesses.
